Europe 2089: Unwitnessed by the world, the continent, now a provincial backwater, has developed a unique immaterial way of life. Based on a shift to social consumption, its still capitalist economy has significantly decreased its need for material resources. And buildings and cities, as factories of immaterial labour, have become the main facilitators of this new regime.
This book is not only a speculation about our future that, beyond left-right politics, tries to connect themes as diverse as neoliberalism, social media, the prosumer or our ever-present tangible desires. But, by recapturing Europe’s fictional history through the lens of Basel and Munich, it can also be read as a strategy proposal of how to overcome our materialistic dependencies for the coming times of scarcity. And the (golden) possibilities this could hold for architecture and urbanism.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Playwright and performer, Amelia Bande, and visual artist, Annette Knol, have been exchanging long distance words since they met in 2007.
Talks, letters, readings, images, dreams and thoughts become an alternative for the lover’s immediate presence while away.

“Into Onto” presents a work in progress that takes the correspondence between two people as a starting point to talk about how we relate through text, symbols, structure, narrative and writing.

The universe Bande and Knol create initially exists purely for their pleasure. By selecting and presenting fragments of their exchange they uncover an archaeology of desire and discontent whilst simultaneously writing new fiction. The editing, transforming, isolating and remaking of these fragments opens a door that goes beyond the mere naming of anecdotes and feelings.

The exchange forms the backbone of the underlying theme: why. Why should we live like this? Can we do it differently? What are the possibilities of change?
“Into Onto” engages with these questions through a mixture of mediums: drawing, installation, photography and a book.

“The Wrapping” will be performed on the opening night.

Amelia Bande (Chile, 1977) & Annette Knol (Netherlands, 1976) both live in Berlin.
Annette Knol is artist in residence at Atelierhaus Salzamt in Linz.

Stolen Artifact (2011)

Project for The Mini Museum of XXI Century Art

Stolen Artifact takes as its starting point the observation that many of the world's museums have, over the years, built their collections from the outright or covert theft of other people's cultural heritage. The return of these objects is an ongoing discussion for many western museums and for the communities which claim them and it seemed fitting that we should provide the Mini Museum of XXI Century Art with its own Stolen Artifact. So we made a short 'guerilla' film of the bust of Nefertiti in the Neues Museum, Berlin - itself an artifact which the Egyptian Ministry for Antiquities are very keen to have returned. Beyond the idea that all 'real' museums need to have some stolen goods on show is the fact that our theft, ie the 'illegal' recording of an image against the orders of the institution, contravenes not the ownership of the object itself but the Neues Museum's ownership of that object's image (postcards are, of course, on sale in the shop.) As such Stolen Artifact is both a video of a stolen object (Nefertiti) and is itself an act of theft whose artifacts, the jagged blotches from this iphone video, are concerned with entirely different questions of ownership.

The MINI Museum of XXI Century Arts (also known as MMAXXI) is a 7'' digital photo frame bought on eBay equipped with a 4GB pen drive. Founded and directed by Domenico Quaranta, the MINI Museum will travel from node to node around a network of artists, and will host temporary solo shows by the artist owning it at the time. All the artworks shown in the MINI Museum will enter the permanent collection of the Museum itself. The Museum will return to the Director when there is no more storage space left.

Nick Crowe and Ian Rawlinson are based in Berlin and Manchester and have worked collaboratively since 1994. Their work is primarily concerned with the languages of power, with its grammar and with its rhetoric. Their projects address questions around faith, politics, national identity and the environment and their video and sculptural works create an encounter with the viewer that focuses on the complexity of objects and actions in relation to their social contexts. Works like The Fireworks, The Carriers' Prayer or The Four Horsemen operate though an unravelling of the social and ideological consequences of an action in regard to its apparent spectacle. This interest in consequence is reflected in the aesthetics of spectacle and excess that sit at the heart of their practice.

A documentary drawing workshop

Was ist das Potenzial der Zeichnung als dokumentarisches Mediums neben Film und Video?
Was sind die Vor-und Nachteile einer Praxis der manuellen Konstruktion von Realität
gegenüber der eines digitalen Bildmediums bezogen auf das dokumentarische Arbeiten?
Und: Wenn man Comik sagt, wieso ists dann keine Kunst mehr sondern Gebrauchsgrafik?

An den vier Workshoptagen gibt es im Kottishop zu diesen Fragen theoretischen Input und die Möglichkeit praktisch los zu legen.
Im "Berlin-Hype-Zentrum" Kotti stellen wir das Thema Tourismus zur Disposition für alle möglichen Experimente mit narrativer Grafik.
Die Comic-Künstlerin Ulli Lust wird neben einer Präsentation ihrer eigenen Arbeiten den Workshop mit begleiten und Drawing Workshop gibt eine Einführung ins Drucken mit einem Copyprinter Schablonen-Vervielfältiger.

Am Ende der vier Tage launchen wir ein Magazin mit allen Ergebnissen. Yeah!

Ausgehend von Klaus Kirstens Rotaprint-Gebäudekomplex im Berliner Wedding hat Torsten Papenheim, basierend auf den architektonischen Linien des Gebäudes, das Stück tracking komponiert.

Sich beziehend auf tracking haben Marcel Grabsch, Torsten Papenheim, Carlos Silva, Annette Knol und Stefan Endewardt eine Ausstellung entworfen, die sich in verschiedenen Disziplinen mit Variation und Verfremdung dieses Stückes auseinandersetzt.

Annette Knol, Carlos Silva und Stefan Endewardt arbeiten zum dritten Mal unter den Namen Colour Rap. Im Pavillon am Milchof wird Colour Rap ihre neue Arbeit CopyCopyCopy präsentieren. Die Arbeit ist eine (räumliche) Reaktion auf tracking von Torsten Papenheim und auf das künstlerische Konzept des Verpackens des Künstlerpaars Christo und Jeanne-Claude, welches kopiert, angeeignet und weiterentwickelt wird.

Colour Rap wird den Pavillon komplett einpacken und auf ihre eigene Art und Weise bespielen.

Zeitgleich installieren Grabsch und Papenheim in dem Gewächshaus für zeitgenössische Kunst super bien! auf dem Milchhof-Gelände ein Archiv, das Skizzen, Ideen, Prozesse und Möglichkeiten sicht- und hörbar macht.

Inmitten der visuellen Zeugnisse baumelt ein Kopfhörer von der Decke, der mit einer Antenne auf dem Dach des Gewächshauses verbunden, das akustische Empfangen des Stückes symbolisiert. Über dem Kopfhörer wird die Komposition in einer Endlosschleife zu hören sein. Auch hier hat die Technik des Kopierens und Verfremdens das Ergebnis beeinflusst: die vier Stimmen des Stücks wurden vielfach abgespielt und wieder aufgenommen.

*Colour Rap ist ein Format, welches konzeptuell mit Farben, Rythmen und Strukturen spielt und abstrakt von den Grundelementen der Rap-Musik (Rhythmus, Beats, Sprache, Poesie, Flow, Breaks,...) inspiriert ist.

Colour Rap entwickelt als prozessorientiertes künstlerisches Experiment aus verschiedenen Farben, Techniken und Materialien, ein eigenes visuelles Vokabular, welches in einem gemeinsamen Improvisationsprozess zu einer Art bunten Sprechgesang geformt wird.

Knol, Silva und Endewardt haben in den letzten Monaten das Battle-Format entwickelt; eine Methode in der das künstlerische Konzept eines anderen Künstlers als Inspirationsquelle und Anfangspunkt benutzt und angeeignet wird. - Christo & Jeanne-Claude are up!

Traditionell ist in der Rap-Musik das Battle-Format eine Art Wettkampf /Schlacht zwischen verschiedenen Rappern, in der versucht wird seine Gegner verbal fertig zu machen.
Colour Rap benutzt die Idee der Battle eher als kollaborativen Moment, in der gemeinsam eine Bühne bespielt wird, wo wir unsere Fähigkeiten entwickeln, teilen und zeigen.

'EVERY TRICK IN THE BOOK' 2010 / 30mins / 16mm

Made by Mat Fleming, Debbie Bower and Harriet Plewis, this film consists of every trick from the 1936 manual 'Trick Effects with the Cine Camera' by H.A.V Bulleid. From spectral appearances, model disasters, bar brawls, dances with giants noses, a trio of characters experience their weird psychodramas connected by a thread of shifting realities manipulated by the amateur film makers ambitions and desires!

'PEACOCK LEE' 2011 / 5mins / 16mm

This film has been made over the past 2 weeks by Annette Knol, Mat Fleming and Debbie Bower. We have been burrowing away in the Kottishop under piles of luscious colour gels, cutting, sticking and generally driving ourselves mad. Come see a colour explosion with a totally handmade film made without cameras or a darkroom. Entirely constructed by collage and still completely unfinished at the time of writing this - an irresistible mystery - to the audience and the filmmakers!

BEFORE THE SCREENING.... at 1pm

We will have an open session where you can come and make your own film loop by cutting and collaging lighting gels onto film. This is the same technique we used for the film workshop as part of the 'Inventional Altag' workshops the other week for those who were interested but couldn't make it. Some of the equipment won't be bountiful, but as long as you're prepared to share lets make awesome loops together! We will ask for a few euros donated per person for the workshop to cover a few materials.

01. - 04. 02 .2011_INVENTIONAL ALLTAG____Workshop+Performances

INVENTIONAL ALLTAG: a multi-layered, experimental, collaborative workshop series culminating into a performance, organised by Annette Knol & Anne Kohl.

In einem fünftägigen Programm mit vier Workshopeinheiten werden unterschiedliche multimediale Techniken vermittelt, anhand derer sich die Workshopteilnehmer_innen (max. 12) mit einer gemeinsam gewählten Thematik aus dem Bereich Alltag auseinandersetzen. Ausgangspunkt für die Themenwahl ist die Beschäftigung mit den Berliner Tageszeitungen. Jede Workshopeinheit, die von einem eigenen Workshopteam betreut wird, hat ihr eigenes Format: Zeichnen/Projektion, Klang, Film/Animation & Choreographie. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf den performativen Aspekten dieser Methoden. Idealerweise nehmen die Teilnehmer_innen an allen vier Workshopeinheiten teil. Vorkenntnisse werden nicht vorausgesetzt.
Die gemeinsame Arbeit mündet in zwei Abschlusspräsentationen (Kotti-Shop, HAU 3) in Form eines Multiplen Environment, einer bewegten Klang- und Bildlandschaft, die live von den Workshopteilnehmer_innen gestaltet wird und interaktive Andockpunkte für die Besucher_innen bietet.

Things get repeated on a daily basis and on every level. Be it casual, accidental, habitual, ritualistic or maniacal: let’s make a break!
Our intension is to intervene with the daily grind through drawing games of echo and repetition, casual deformation and reinterpretation of prototypes. Armed with overheads, slide-projectors, carbon paper, stencils, paint, markers, collage-material and so on, we will revel ourselves in a copy-orgy and collaboratively create absurd duplications.

SOUND - Inventionen, Intensionen und Interventionen des Alltäglichen mit Anne Kohl & Laura Mello

Wie klingt der Alltag? Wie kann man durch Fantasie den alltäglichen Klang verwirren, und nach unserer Vorstellung neu gestalten? Wir werden mit Alltagsgegenständen, Haushaltsobjekten und Instrumenten experimentieren, sie klingen lassen, mit Effekten erweitern, bis wir letztendlich durch eine Strukturierung der Klangobjekte in der Zeit eine neue Alltagsordnung gründen.
Technische oder musikalische Vorkenntnisse sind nicht notwendig.

News flash - film is just projected shadows. In an attempt to represent reality and put the news on the screen in a really new way we introduce a technique for making 16mm film without film. We'll be photocopying newsprint onto gels and then splicing them onto sprockets for super saturated colour collage. When projected in an improvised multiple projector jam, these filmstrips will reach new levels of intensity - like exploding jewellery boxes in a sea of alphabet spaghetti.

Choreography with Amelia Bande & Francisca Villela

Simple dance steps and movement workshop based on newspaper phrases.
This is the last workshop and it adds the movement (alive human layer) to the landscapes constructed on the previous workshops.
We will first give the participants names of different dance steps or movement taken from newspaper headlines or news (like: “fighting gang culture with football” or “women claim record for invincibility”). This inverts the logic in which you first create a dance step and then you put a name to it. Participants will make their own interpretations of the titles and together we will create movements about what we think the titles speak about. The headlines become a series of dance steps, which add up into a simple choreography that will be performed within the created 3D landscape.

In der Arbeit „Notiz“ setzt sich Stefanie Busch mit den Ereignissen in Jugoslavien,
die Anfang der 90er Jahre begannen und sich bis heute fortschreiben, auseinander
und zeigt ein Portrait vom heutigen, stark gezeichneten Sarajevo.

1976 geboren in Hamburg.
Studierte Bildende Künste an der Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile
und Media Art an der Universität der Künste Berlin, wo er seit 2003 lebt.

Installation: Collage, Video und Buch, Maße variabel

Die Collage einer Vielzahl unterschiedlicher europäischer Postkarten konstruiert eine fiktive Landschaft.
Darin befinden sich ein Video aus einem Eisenbahntunnel, in dem ein Lied zu hören ist,
das über die Möglichkeit geduldig zu sein erzählt, wie auch ein Buch dessen Titel das Gegenteil des Liedtextes behauptet.

David Buob & Susan Schmidt
David Buob 1972 geboren in Calw, studierte Architektur in Kassel
und nach einer Ausbildung zum Steinbildhauer Bildende Kunst an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden.
Susan Schmidt 1973 geboren in Arnstadt, studierte von 1993 bis 1999 Englisch und Kunst an der Universität
Leipzig und an der Brock University in Kanada und von 2000 bis 2003
Freie Kunst und Visuelle Kommunikation an der Bauhaus Universität
Weimar. Nach einem 1jährigen Gastaufenthalt 2007 im Fine Arts Master
Graduierten Programm des Piet Zwart Institutes, Rotterdam, NL
lebt Susan Schmidt in Nijmegen, Niederlande.

In der Videoarbeit “Nine Cases in Numerical Order” werden durch 9 Gesten 9 Orte
der litauischen Touristenstadt Palanga für einen kurzen Moment animiert.
Aus improvisierten Gesten entwickeln Buob und Schmidt narrative nicht-lineare Geschichten,
die den psychologischen Prozess des Erinnerns auf künstlerische Weise beschreiben.
Die Arbeit versucht, diesen Moment in seiner Intensität und gleichzeitigen Flüchtigkeit zu fassen.

After last years Enter The Diarama: The 3D Life-Size Drawing Workshop experience at the incredible Extrapool we decided to organise another one when Quinten (Extrapool / Belchkitchen) told us he is coming to town.........
We would like to invite you to the 3D High Rise Multi Podia Drawing Workshop at the Kotti-Shop.
This 2-day event will take place next week on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th of August.
The idea is to build an environment/set/stage/decor for the performances that will take place on the last night.

MO. 11.05. __________Live-Fotostudio im Kottishop

Liebe Kollegen und Freunde,
Wir freuen uns sehr, Euch zu einem Live- Fotoshooting der besonderen Art einladen zu können:
Nach 6 Monaten gemeinsamer Arbeit mit SchülerInnen der 9. Klasse der Kurt-Löwenstein-Schule
in Berlin Neukölln, vielen Fragen und einigen Momenten des "Lost in Translation" laden die SchülerInnen jetzt zu einem abschließenden Live- Fotostudio ein.
Im Kotti-Shop, einem neuen Projektraum am Kottbusser Tor, der nachbarschaftlichen
Austausch durch eine kollaborative Praxis fördert, stehen die Türen dafür einen Tag offen:
Passanten, eingeladene Gäste und Mitschüler oder Nachbarn sind herzlich eingeladen, sich von den Jugendlichen
inszenieren und fotografieren zu lassen. Wie die Jugendlichen uns und andere sehen und ablichten wird experimentell erfahren.

Come to Kotti-Shop this Friday at 19:00 and discover windows into other worlds amongst the Holiday Season debris. Uncle Tim is bringing his slide projector, Cousin Saandie is setting up her super-8 and they'll be living out the annual family breakdown whilst battling for your attention with stolen, found and sometimes self-recorded sentimentality, a moving slide-show extravaganza, all happening under the brittle drying boughs of the Tannenbaum. Offering winter essentials like warm spiced wine and pretzels, Kotti-Shop's Side Bar promises faux-intimate entertainment with a liquor-praline aftertaste.
